Sharp explained that when families come in, they receive protective gear, canvases and paints before heading into a small room, where they can throw paint on the canvas, on the wall, or on each other. The store that was once filled with linens, dishes and centerpieces is now largely empty, allowing Sharp to easily convert it for different themed events, like the recent Visit with Santa that allowed single families to book 10-minute private sessions. I think in the normal world, I would not have considered opening this place because I would have felt the space was insufficient, but it's actually perfect for right now." "But I kept going back to that splatter thing and how much fun we had," Sharp said. "I started researching, and it turns out that there's nothing in the area that offers that kind of family entertainment. Meanwhile, she was receiving rejection after rejection for relief funding from both public and private funds and was becoming overwhelmed by her amount of wedding inventory and lack of sales. Sharp built a makeshift booth in a backyard, bought canvases and paints and had a blast with her niece all day. "She was turning 12 and couldn't have friends over, so I came up with the idea of splatter painting." I was looking for something messy and fun because I'm the aunt and it drives moms crazy," Sharp said. "We couldn't celebrate like we normally do, so I was trying to think of fun ideas for us. Sharp first had the idea for a splatter paint room this past summer when she was trying to think of a safe way to celebrate her and her niece's birthdays. I'll be sitting out here, and I just hear giggles," said Sharp, a North Akron native who graduated from North High School and Walsh University. "It's low tech, but it is so much fun for me. And within two months of closing ONSB, she reopened her storefront as The Family Room, a splatter paint space where single families can get messy and let loose in a safe environment. Rather than let the business fold, Sharp decided to transfer her sales online and completely reimagine what she could offer the community as a small-business owner. "I could not commit to closing ONSB until I could figure out what else I was going to do." "We were really unsure how long this was going to go on or how bad it was going to get, but I wasn't ready to let go," Sharp said. The resale store had just started to gain traction when the pandemic hit, causing big events to be scaled back or canceled outright and effectively eliminating her customer base.
